Art, Advocacy, and Inclusion: Revisiting Through the Eyes of Artists
In 2005, Through the Eyes of Artists brought together a group of engaged citizens to explore themes of disability, inclusion, and citizenship through art. Produced by Art House Productions, this documentary follows artists with developmental disabilities as they share their perspectives on human rights and belonging through storytelling and visual expression. Nearly two decades later, this work remains just as important as ever.
Using Art to Advocate for Change
The artists featured in this documentary used video storytelling to communicate with decision-makers about the lived experiences of people with disability. They explored themes of discrimination, isolation, poverty, transportation, and the right to love, marry, and have children—all of which continue to shape the experiences of many people with disabilities today. Through their art, they challenged societal perceptions and fought for their rightful place as active citizens in their communities.
For many, film and visual storytelling became powerful tools for advocacy—allowing artists to express their lived experiences and push for meaningful change. These stories reinforced the importance of accessibility and representation, reminding decision-makers that policies should be shaped with and by people with disabilities, not just for them.
The Intersection of Art and Advocacy
The artists involved in this project demonstrated a deep awareness of social justice issues that extended beyond their personal experiences. Many had faced discrimination, institutionalization, and economic hardship, yet their art revealed a broader understanding of inequality, demonstrating solidarity with others facing oppression.
A significant focus of the project was public transportation—an issue that directly affects accessibility, independence, and full participation in society. The group worked on a collective art piece advocating for better and more affordable transit options, highlighting how deeply embedded transportation is in conversations about human rights.
A Lasting Impact on Disability Rights
A book was produced alongside the documentary, chronicling the eight-month journey of 13 individuals who explored disability and citizenship through artistic expression. The project became a space for transformation, as participants discovered new identities as artists, social critics, and community activists. More than just an artistic endeavour, it was an act of self-advocacy—reclaiming space in conversations about human rights and social inclusion.
In an era where digital media is constantly evolving, important works like Through the Eyes of Artists risk being forgotten. By resurfacing this documentary, we hope to celebrate its impact and encourage further dialogue on disability rights, inclusion, and the role of art in advocacy.
